Europe’s losing. Now what?
For “Politico” the case is clear: “Putin’s losing”. But how about Europe? The authors do not come to the obvious question of what the situation is in the EU.
Yet the EU is also on the losing streak. The Europeans are groaning under the largest refugee stream since the Second World War, the highest energy prices ever and inflation that is in double figures.
Half the Eurozone is sliding into recession, the Franco-German engine is no longer pulling, the European post-war model is en panne. But no one wants to admit that. Even the energy crisis is being suppressed.
The resolutions passed at the last EU summit are only vague declarations of intent. Weeks, if not months, can pass before action is finally taken. Gas already costs ten times as much as in the USA.
The next threat is an oil price shock. The nonsensical oil embargo that the EU decided on in the summer and that will come into force in December will drive up prices. The negative effect on diesel is already noticeable.
When winter comes and gas, oil and electricity become unaffordable at the same time, even Robert Habeck will realise that we have been trading with lemons while the USA profits from the crisis.
Europe’s losing. Now what? One looks in vain for an answer in Brussels. In the European quarter, they have not even recognised that the EU is on the losing track. Putin’s losing – that’s what moves the minds…

P.S. The fixation on Putin and Ukraine is quite understandable in view of the war. However, this does not relieve the EU of its duty to defend European interests and avert the approaching mega-crisis. When will it finally start doing so?
