Trump, Greenland and the failure of the EU

Brussels is missing in the struggle over Greenland and the imperial desires of the next US-administration

First they looked the other way. Then they evaded. And in the end, they gave the wrong answers: The new EU leadership in Brussels failed miserably in the struggle over Greenland and Denmark and the imperial desires of the USA.

Instead of immediately countering future US President Trump, the new EU foreign policy chief Kallas sent out a tweet on the gas crisis in Moldova – naturally with a jab at Russia, which she blames for all the world’s ills.

Instead of taking sides with Denmark, Council President Costa has remained silent. Yet it is his job to represent the member states. After his first EU summit in December, the Portuguese president received a lot of praise, now he deserves a beating.

The biggest problem is not even that the EU leadership is silent – including the usually chatty Commission President von der Leyen. You could at least justify this by saying that you shouldn’t jump over every stick.

The real failure is to stare like a rabbit at a snake and wait for Trump instead of approaching him and proactively representing European interests. This is how the EU puts itself at the mercy of the Republican and his whims!

If we then also ‘forget’ to put up a large, highly visible stop sign and show Trump his limits, we are only fuelling his geo-economically disguised neo-imperialism even further!
