Trumps fifth column

The Trump election is plunging the EU into an existential crisis. All of a sudden, it’s becoming apparent how dependent EUrope is of the US. Chancellor Merkel especially is under big pressure – Trump could put her into a double lock.

It has only been three weeks since I analyzed the “Crisis West” in this Blog. Back then, it was about the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands, who question(ed) EU politics.

It was about the inner crisis of the EU, that is not only concerning South and Eastern Europe, but also the West, the old center of Europe. Now, there’s an external crisis being added – but it too is shaking Europe to its core.

Because Trump is not a new occurrence, Berlusconi was already a predecessor. And the turned US are not alone. They already have a foot in the European door, at least they already have a partner in the UK.

This is already showing effects in Brussels, where the English foreign minister Johnson skipped a special meeting of senior diplomats. He is a Trump fan and therefore does not want to discuss the consequences of the US election.

Besides the Brits, Poland and Hungary should be counted as Trump fans as well. Hungary’s prime minister even celebrated Trump’s election. The EU is therefore not united against Trump, but instead weakened.

The situation gets even more complicated when you take Russia and Turkey into account. Should Trump make good of his announcements and embrace Putin and Erdogan, then he might execute a double lock on the EU.

Especially vulnerable of this is, of all things, the supposedly all-powerful Germany. Because Chancellor Merkel has made herself dependent of Erdogan. He in turn is working with Putin, who is counting on Trump.

If things go wrong, a fifth column will be formed, that could not only make things tough for Merkel. The EU will not be able to stand against this with moral lectures alone…
