„Trump wants global regime change“

What is really happening in the US? After the travel ban, many politicians in the EU are desperately asking this question. Here is what W. Münchau from the FT thinks:

There is a growing number of signs that what is happening in the US constitutes a national and global regime change. The elevation of Steven Bannon to a full seat of the National Security Council tells us that more outrages are now very likely. We noted this Bannon quote, as relayed by the New Yorker.

“I’m a Leninist…Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that’s my goal, too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment.”

Bannon is the power behind the throne in the White House, as this shocking report in Foreign Policy suggests. It says that he is running a de-facto shadow security council. The joint chiefs of staff are sidelined. Executive orders are drafted outside the usual channels. We noted this discussion of the extent to which the events of the last 24 hours already constituted a coup d’etat as the administration is now testing how far it can go in ignoring the legal process.

If this analysis is correct, the EU is in real, and acute, danger. The reaction from Brussels so far is not only disappointing, to be polite. More on this here.
